Five brilliant comets to see in 2024

A captivating image of a dark sky filled with stars, featuring a comet streaking across the celestial expanse, leaving a luminous trail in its wake

Hello, stargazing enthusiasts! Good day to you as we embark on a celestial journey, exploring the cosmic wonders that 2024 has in store for us. Brace yourselves for a celestial spectacle as we delve into the realm of comets that are set to grace the night sky, captivating both seasoned observers and newcomers alike.

In the vast canvas of the cosmos, the term "bright comet" takes on a special significance, denoting objects visible to the unaided eye or with minimal assistance like binoculars. The brightness of these cosmic wanderers is quantified using apparent magnitudes, where a lower magnitude signifies a brighter object. Away from the urban glow, the naked eye can discern stars up to the 6th or 7th magnitude. However, to catch a glimpse of comets with higher magnitudes, the aid of astronomical instruments becomes indispensable.

Let's now set our sights on the five celestial travelers gracing our skies in 2024:

62P/Tsuchinshan (Magnitude 8):

  • Our cosmic journey begins with 62P/Tsuchinshan, which made its closest approach to the Sun on Christmas day in 2023. Still shining brightly at a magnitude of about 8, it gracefully glides from Leo into Virgo. Watch out for its return in 2030.

144P/Kushida (Magnitude 9):

  • On the eve of January 25th, the evening comet 144P/Kushida will reach perihelion, illuminating the night sky at a magnitude of 9. It will make its appearance near Uranus and then dance by the head of Orion in February. Prepare for its encore in 2031.

C/2021 S3 PanSTARRS (Predicted Magnitude 8.3):

  • March promises a celestial rendezvous with the Oort cloud guest, C/2021 S3 PanSTARRS. Predicted to shine at a magnitude of 8.3, it will traverse the Coathanger Cluster, south of the constellation Vulpecula, towards the end of March, possibly gleaming as bright as 7.5 magnitudes.

12P/Pons-Brooks (Magnitude 5):

  • The month of March gifts us with the luminous presence of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks. Visible in the early evening, this comet, reaching a magnitude of about 5, will gracefully traverse from Andromeda through northern Pisces into Aries. A long-term visitor, it plans a return engagement in 2095.

C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (Potential Magnitude 4):

  • As autumn leaves fall, another bright visitor from the Oort cloud, C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, will grace our skies. Visible a few weeks after its perihelion on September 27, 2024, and reaching a potential magnitude of 4 on its closest approach to Earth on October 12, 2024, this comet promises a captivating display in the early evening sky.
